Description

As seen on TED Talks, Kevin Bales will be visiting Vassar College January 30th, 2018 to speak about how environmental destruction is a significant cause of human trafficking. Mr. Bales is a Professor of Contemporary Slavery at the University of Nottingham, UK. He was a Co-Founder of Free the Slaves in Washington, D.C. and is Lead Author of the Global Slavery Index. He serves on the board of directors for the Freedom Fund and as a consultant to the United Nations Global Program on Trafficking of Human Beings and edited the UN Toolkit on human trafficking. Going undercover to meet slaves and slaveholders, Kevin Bales exposed how modern slavery penetrates the global economy in his Pulitzer-nominated book, Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy. The film based on this book, Slavery: A Global Investigation (TrueVision), which he co-wrote for HBO and Channel 4, won a Peabody Award and two Emmys. Vassar Underground and the Environment and Geography Department presents: Kevin Bales. Come learn more about human trafficking and the intersection with environmental degradation.
