World Elder Abuse Awarness Day Confer...

Description

EverCare and Friends of Seniors are proud to announce that an event that highlights the 9th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will take place on Friday, June 16th at the Poughkeepsie Elks Lodge #275 on Overocker Road. Our theme this year is: “LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION AGAINST ELDER ABUSE” As our elderly population increases, elder abuse and other crimes against older persons are also on the increase. It is critical to know how to recognize elder abuse and how to get help if you’re a victim or you suspect someone you know is being abused. A recent study of elder abuse prevalence in New York State found that 76 out of every 1,000 older New Yorkers were victims of elder abuse in a one-year period. The reported incidence rate is nearly 24 times greater than the number of referred cases. This suggests that many elders are not seeking, or getting, the assistance they need. In past years this conference has generated attendance of over 160 community members; this year we anticipate over 200 community members, elected officials, and professionals to attend. Conference presenters include: NYS Senator, Sue Serino Dutchess County Executive, Marcus Molinaro • Keynote speaker Arlene M. Markarian Chief of Elder Abuse Unit, Nassau County District Attorney’s Office • Lawrence Force, PhD Gerontologist, Professor of Psychology, Mount Saint Mary College • Mitchell Rubin, M.D. Chief Medical Officer, EverCare We welcome you to join us for the conference as a sponsor and to take action against elder abuse. We are also pleased to announce that net proceeds from this conference are being donated to the Center for Victim Safety & Support and Grace Smith House, Inc. for use to support education and outreach, as well as provide direct support to victims of elder abuse.
